Today, we know that the abundance of information also brings with it a problem: Being able to distinguish right from wrong, truth from illusion. It is important to consider critical thinking at this point. Critical thinking is not only the ability to consume information, but also to question, analyze and evaluate it.
Critical thinking first begins with awareness. A person should feel the need to question the accuracy of the information they encounter. This questioning is shaped by questions such as "Where does this information come from?", "Is its source reliable?" and "In what context is this information presented?"
The next step is to analyze the information. Analysis involves breaking the information into pieces and examining each piece separately. In this process, it is important to detect logical errors, evaluate the consistency of arguments and consider alternative perspectives.
Another important element of critical thinking is to be open-minded. Critical thinking is a tool not only for refuting opposing views, but also for questioning our own thoughts. This allows the individual to realize their own prejudices and reshape their thoughts when necessary.
For example;
• When you read a news story, evaluating the source of the news and the possible biases of the writer is one of the first steps of critical thinking.
• Instead of focusing solely on the results of an argument presented in a discussion, it is necessary to try to understand how that conclusion was reached.
• Even if you have a strong belief in a subject, listening to and trying to understand opposing views is one of the cornerstones of critical thinking.
Finally, critical thinking requires taking action. The results obtained from the questioning and analysis process should shape the individual's decisions and behaviors. Individuals who think critically can make more conscious choices and positively affect both their own lives and the society they live in.
In short, questioning and analyzing information, being open-minded, and turning results into action allows individuals and society to live more conscious lives. Since critical thinking makes people both freer and more conscious, we can say that it should actually be a way of life.
