Thinking is one of the most basic and complex abilities of humans. In order to understand the functioning of the human mind, it is necessary to understand the nature of thought.
Thinking, as a mental process, is the way an individual makes sense of, interprets, reacts to, and shapes the world around them. It is also a creative, critical, and abstract process. The nature of thought includes both biological and psychological elements. While the neural connections in the brain form the physical basis of thought, the individual's experiences, culture, and education shape the content of thought.
In order to understand thought, we must also understand the following elements:
Perception: The first step of thought is the perception of information from the environment. Perception collects information through the senses, processes the information, and places it in a mental framework. It is an active process that can be developed.
Memory: Perceived information is stored in memory and associated with past experiences. Memory ensures the continuity of thought.
Logic and Reasoning; Thought progresses by establishing logical connections and reasoning processes. Starting from a series of premises, it occurs in the form of inferences or arguments through reasoning to reach a conclusion. This process allows the individual to establish a cause-effect relationship between events.
Emotions: Thinking is not only a rational process. Emotions can affect the direction and intensity of thought. It is always necessary to avoid making decisions based solely on emotions.
The process of thought formation is usually a combination of conscious and unconscious processes. “The unconscious is thought processes, memories, interests and motivations that are automatically carried out by the mind and are not open to introspection.” While unconscious processes operate quickly and automatically, conscious thought is slower and more controlled.
When analyzing a thought, it is not enough to understand only how the thought is formed; we also want to contribute to the thought by presenting arguments for it and to increase its quality. Critical thinking plays an important role in this section. On the other hand, creativity is the process of producing new and original ideas by pushing the boundaries of thought. Critical thinking and creativity increase the individual's power to transform both herself/himself and her/his environment.
